PAINTING

Painting is probably the most fun I have in the studio. Having majored in it across the world and taught it at Rhodes University from 2017 to 2020, it is both the money maker and the passion project.

KUMBAYA

Oil on canvas, 60x90cm, 2019

I made this series at the beginning of the pandemic and I was thinking of social distancing versus communion. It was a time of solitude of course, but there was a sense of being together with other things. The term Kumbaya is thought to be a Gullah term. An African American song from the 1920s earnestly urging a spiritual being for presence. Simply asking, in broken English: Come by here.

PROBLEMATIC

Oil on canvas, varying sizes, 2020

This series represents another Ernest experiment in trying to unlearn things. Perhaps the lockdown had offered me clarity - allowing me to attempt to see that which evades me.
